One of the most important things about sewing is taking your body measurements and of course getting it correct- ha! When I joined sewing classes late last year, the first thing I was thought was how to take my measurements.
I am by no means a professional and know that there is a lot of room for improvement but hope that what I have listed below can help you get started.
Measurement breakdown
1 = Shoulder line
2 = Chest line
3 = Bust line
4 = Waist line (measurement should be taken right around the body not only the front of your body)
5 = Hip line (measurement should be taken right around the body not only the front of your body)
6 = Crutch line
7 = Sleeve line (with your arm in a bent position, the measurement is taken from the end part of your shoulder all the way down till your wrist)
8 = Waist to hip
9 = Armhole
10 = Back width
11 = Ankle size
12 = Waist to knee line
Tips for measuring:
- When taking measurements on any part of the body always allow for some flexibility
- When it comes to the bust line, measure on the widest part of the bust
- The measurement of the hip should be taken around the widest part of the hip
- Bend your arm when taking the sleeve length to allow extra room for movement in your garment
