Of late I have received a few DM's on Facebook from various people who are interested in sewing but don't know where to start. My usual response would be related to finding a tutor or an online course however this isn't always possible for various reasons. When this happens I usually refer people to YouTube as there are plenty tutorials and beginner projects to follow.
The question has inspired me to list down a basic items you need to really get started. These are things I started off with in my 12 week course. While not all of them are required immediately, it's good to have them readily available as you work thought your sewing journey.
My first garment I had put together was a block bodice. A block bodice is the first step in learning how to draft your own patterns so I believe this would be a good start for all beginners.
Check out the list below:
Sewing
Sewing machine
Non stretch / slippery material (material such as cotton, linin or a combined cotton-linin like material would be best suited)
Needle suited for the type of material you are stitching (I would advise using a universal needle as this one works on most materials)
Matching cotton (you only need one color but ensure you have a nice thick roll as you will need enough cotton to wind up your bobbin)
A sharp pair of scissors (this scissors will only be used when cutting material)
Pattern Making
Tailors measuring tape (this is to take your body measurements)
A curve ruler
L-Square ruler
A dark pencil
Eraser
Sharpener
One sheet of A1 (hard) paper to draw your pattern
A pair of scissors dedicated to cutting (hard) paper
Instructions on how to craft a block bodice & space to dot down your measurements
Additional items (these items are not required immediately)
A standard size ruler
A calculator (to help with measurements)
Material tracing paper (you can find this at any material shop)
Sellotape
A notebook
A pen
As a side note, if you do not have A1 paper you can also using gift wrapping paper (but you will have to be extra cautious so that the paper doesn't tear apart)
